THE FINAL RESOLUTION: NO MORE AFFAIRS

(performed at TRUTH OR FICTION show, at THE FUNHOUSE LOUNGE...1/20/13)

On New Year's eve, it hit me.
I've been living in Portland for five years.
Five.  Long.  Years.
I moved here from LA, running from the corrosive ripples of one showbiz disaster too many.
I'd been writing for a soap opera, living in Van Nuys, coping with the sweltering filth of the valley and making a wage by tapping deep pubescent memories of an air-conditioned East Coast summer, when I'd watch General Hospital and One Life to Live with my mom,
thrilling to the pecadilloes of self-conscious, generically attractive white people who never stop talking.  Bo and Monica and Luke and Laura.  Felicia and Frisco and Chad and Troy and Clint and Rio and Scorpio.   Their convoluted mating paths of fear and desire were tattooed on my subconscious.  My hormones were just starting to simmer as I studied those shows, and I assumed adult life would be an endless, episodic careening from one feverish, trauma-twisted psychosexual rendezvous to the next, with no time for reflection, responsibility, or narrative logic.
At least as far as MY adult life is concerned, that has turned out to be true.

HYPNO REVISITED #7.2: 6-ISSUE "AMERIKAN ZER0!" SYNOPSIS

AMERIKAN ZER0!
An electroclash action/horror/comedy
in 6 brutal installments.
written by Jason Squamata
illustrated by Andrew Mc Kenzie

pages above from HYPNO KOMIX #0.
(design by OWEN HUNTER based on art by ANDREW Mc KENZIE).

Suddenly, the soundtrack.  A vertiginous mash-up of James Barry's "007" theme and the Jimi Hendrix "Star-Spangled Banner".  The images come at you like an uberpop superspy credit sequence that need never end, introducing a paranoid, adrenalized action movie too intense to actually exist.

Behold the machine that screams beneath the scar-spangled skin of FREEDOM. Welcome to the United Syndicates of Americorp.  It's the world outside your window, only MORESO.  It's a garish nightmare strip-mall, with fifty states and flavors of terror on sale forever, while supplies last.  No money down.  Everything must go.
And the perfect hero for such a turgid, troubled NOW?

...
clean room...tv static...greenbaum on the TV...in the zero zone with Dr. Sidney Greenbaum
A completely white room with no windows and no signs of identity.  No decoration.  Nothing personal.  Curvy modern design.  There might be the stray accoutrements of a human life, but they've been bled of distinguishing features (like blank magazines full of blank pages or framed blank canvases on the walls).  at the center of the room, there's a curvy (almost circular) white TV on a curvy white stem.  the screen is full of hissing static.  the shaved and almost featureless adam zero is sitting bolt upright in a white plastic chair, watching the screen with attentive intensity, searching the snow for a reason to be.  the static ripples and there's a glyph on a test pattern background.  a five-pointed all-american star with a zero in it.  it counts from seven down to zero, then fades to a close-up of dr. greenbaum, in the garish red white and blue of the zero zone, oversaturated on a tv frequency.  then we cut to greenbaum in the zero zone itself.  there is a sprawling wall of screens in the background, displaying surveillance shots of zer0 from various angles, bald and blank, sitting still but twitching slightly in the clean room.  greenbaum is a spindly and clinical figure, with a long, ageless face and a sardonic intelligence visibly at work behind oily black eyes.  he's wearing the somewhat slept-in suit of a born spook.  he's often smoking a cigarette and/or drinking a cup of tea.
CAPTION: and YOU are that nobody now.  In between coverself A and coverself B, you gestate in a room of pure nowhere.
CAPTION: IN A CLEAN ROOM STRIPPED OF EVERY OTHER ADJECTIVE AND SCOURED FREE OF FEATURES, WHERE YOU'RE FREE TO BE NO ONE, WHERE YOU CAN FINALLY TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND WATCH SOME TV.
CAPTION:  JUST THE STATIC HISS AT FIRST, THEN A GLYPH YOU FIND FAMILIAR, THEN A FROZEN FACE YOU KNOW BETTER THAN YOUR OWN, LIPSYNCHING HYPNOBABBLE ON A SHRILL BUT PERSUASIVE FREQUENCY THAT VIBRATES IN YOUR VERY VISCERA.
GREENBAUM (in electric bubbles in a clock-like radius around his hovering face on the final screen, murmuring against a churning hypnoscape):
0X0=0.
YOU ARE NOT WHO YOU ARE.
ZER0.  ZER0.  ZER0.
0(divided by)0=0.
YOU ARE NOT WHO YOU ARE.
ADAM ZER0 POINT ZER0.
0+0=0.
YOU ARE NOT WHO YOU ARE.
YOU MINUS YOU EQUALS ZER0.
0-0=0.
YOU ARE MY AMERIKAN ZER0.

HYPNO REVISITED #6: 6-ISSUE "OTHERMAN & THE ORAKULOIDS" SYNOPSIS

    "OTHERMAN & THE ORAKULOIDS"
                       a 6-issue synopsis
               written by JASON SQUAMATA
                 illustrated by OWEN HUNTER

Picture this...
Surrealist sorcerors vs. Nazi super-scientists, sniffing krystalnacht and dropping rainbow bombs in a psychedelic gangwar on the neurotic, erotic streets of occupied Paris, circa nineteen thirty-whatever.
Picture a league of illuminated asylum inmates in sharp suits...chic and haunted men and women...schooled in the dark arts and unleashed by a sentient dream disease called OTHERMAN, living and dying to defend creative chaos from the fearful symmetries of the Ubermenschen.
Its images and storylines and technologies are based on the lives and works of the Surrealist painters and poets of the 1930's...and the real-life supervillains of the Third Reich.
It's a feverish pulp adventure story in six episodes, in English, on real paper, in colors hitherto unseen by the conscious eye.
It’s a phantasmagoric comedy of carnage for dream junkies and Nazi-killers and art lovers of all ages and states of decay.  Close your lying eyes and feast on what follows through the hungry pores of your hypno-skin.

HYPNO REVISITED #5: 6-ISSUE "TEENAGE LUVKRAFT" SYNOPSIS

"TEENAGE LUVKRAFT"
synopsis for a 6-issue miniseries
written by
JASON SQUAMATA
illustrated and soundtracked by
SIR RICHARD WENTWORTH

TEENAGE LUVKRAFT is a comically horrific coming-of age saga in which a 16 year old tiki-faced cartoon of H.P. Lovecraft (the great pulp poet of cosmic horror) struggles to achieve dignity and gravitas amongst the beautiful people of a fun-loving seaside town.  He finds himself by following the counsel of a forbidden book and by delving into his inner darkness, conjuring a kind of glamour from his wretchedness.  In the process, he transforms the cosmos and the town around him from a fogged-up window into a sickly funhouse mirror.
It's a six-issue story told from many angles, disguised as an anthology comic, with one major 22 page episode per issue, and back-up strips that explore various sub-plots through the visual vocabularies of different genres.  Imagine that "Lovecraft Feeling", spliced with the tropes of "beach movies", Archie comics, Saturday morning cartoons, and Rankin-Bass holiday specials.  Imagine Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello singing in the shadow of the risen R'Lyeh.
Imagine Betty and Veronica...with tentacles.

HYPNO REVISITED #4.1: OTHERMAN & THE ORAKULOIDS #1:" THE FINAL ENIGMA" (FULL SCRIPT by SQUAMATA)

PAGE ONE (five panels):
PANEL 1:
A long vertical panel on the left-hand side of the page.  An almost diagonal, sprawling cityscape of Paris at dusk.  The Eiffel tower in the distance.  An obvious sunset.  Somewhere amongst the gables and roofs and turrets and cupolas, the Lautreamont Asylum is visible...tiny but distinct.  (see below).
Caption:
 PARIS. 1930. BETWEEN THE WARS.

Caption:
THE CITY OF LIGHT WAS STILL SHELL-SHOCKED.

Caption:
WE LOVED AND WE HATED, WE CREATED AND DESTROYED
WITH A DESPERATE ENERGY...

Caption:
HALF TO FORGET AND HALF TO REMEMBER WHAT WE'D
LEARNED IN THE TRENCHES...

PANEL TWO:
Establishing shot of the Lautreamont Asylum, a massive mental institution on the Boulevard St.
Marcel.  Use the infamous Pitie-Salpetriere as a reference, but warp it to your heart's content.
the major change: on its uppermost floor, in the central wing, there's a huge circular window (think Ditko's sanctum sanctorum window in "Dr. Strange", or the spiderweb window in Eisner's
"Spirit").  Its stained glass and its frame suggest a gaping, bloodshot eyeball.  What sky we
see is still dusky.
Caption:
THAT THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD IS A MADHOUSE.

Caption:
SOME HOUSES, OF COURSE, ARE MORE MAD THAN OTHERS...
